This is a beautiful August 15th, 1948 «Stagebill» playbill from the National Tour engagement of the groundbreaking RICHARD RODGERS and OSCAR HAMMERSTEIN II musical comedy «OKLAHOMA!» at the Erlanger Theatre in Chicago, Illinois. (The Original Broadway production opened March 31st, 1943 at the St. James Theatre in New York City and ran for 2212 performances while simultaneously playing on the road.) ….. The musical starred CAROLYN TANNER as «Laurey», WILTON CLARY as «Curly», EDITH GRESHAM as «Aunt Eller», JACQUELINE DANIELS as «Ado Annie», JAMES PARNELL as «Will Parker», HY ANZEL as «Ali Hakim» and BRUCE HAMILTON as «Jud Fry» and featured OWEN MARTIN, FLORENZ AMES, ALICIA KRUG, VLADIMIR KOSTENKO, THOMAS SPENCER and ERIK KRISTEN. Listed among the dancers was JOSEPH LAYTON in what had been his Broadway debut ….. CREDITS: Music by RICHARD RODGERS; Book and Lyrics by OSCAR HAMMERSTEIN II based on the play «Green Grow the Lilacs» by LYNN RIGGS. (This was the first collaboration for Rodgers and Hammerstein who would go on to write «Carousel», «The King and I», «South Pacific», «Flower Drum Song» and «The Sound of Music» among others); Sets designed by LEMUEL AYERS; Costumes designed by MILES WHITE; Choreographed by AGNES de MILLE; Directed by ROUBEN MAMOULIAN; Produced by THE THEATRE GUILD ….. DETAILS: The 24 page playbill measures 6 3/4″ X 9 1/4″ inches and includes full production credits, cast list, synopsis of scenes, list of musical numbers and bios of each of the leading actors, but no cast photos ….. CONDITION: With the exception of light edge wear, this playbill is in excellent condition and will make a wonderful addition to the collection of any musical theatre aficionado or historian. This item will be carefully packaged in a protective, carded sleeve and backed by stiff cardboard.
