The native Indians of the plains and mountains were a proud people. Although their lifestyle has faded like the smoke from their campfires and tepees, their stories live on. The mountains and creeks carry their names; and their relics remain buried beneath the soil of their forgotten campsites. I was motivated to paint this girl when I saw a photograph of my cousin’s wife. She was part Cherokee, and I thought her features were stunning. The landscape is actually a scene from Sweet, Idaho, looking up toward where I was raised. We found arrowheads in our fields, and my Grandma Swander used to tell us tales about Indians. She, as far as we could discover, had Native blood from the Osage tribes of Oklahoma.
