Primarily "U" class submarines were intended as unarmed target ships for submarine training. In this role they had to replace the retired "H" class submarines build still at the times of I World War. In the early project phase it was decided to arm them with six bow torpedo tubes: two outer and for inner ones. Because they had to be the schooling and training ships their construction was incredibly simple and cheap. The characteristic feature of the first seven ships of this class was an prominent bow hiding two external torpedo tubes. The first of the new submarine class HMS Undine, was completed in 1937. As soon occurred the prominent bows and short periscopes delimited ships fighting capabilities. Because of this only three first ships retained hulls in a primal form. After the outbreak of WWII these small ships suddenly proved very useful for operations in Norwegian coastal waters and the Mediterranean. Constantly improved, they became one of the most numerous Royal Navy submarine classes of WWII.
