Galileo Galilei was born on February 15, 1564, in Pisa, Italy. He came from a humble background and initially studied medicine at the University of Pisa. However, his true passion lay in mathematics and natural philosophy. Galileo's early experiments with pendulums and his observations of the swinging motion led to his discovery of isochronism, which states that the period of a pendulum's swing remains constant regardless of its amplitude. This discovery provided a reliable method for measuring time and became the basis for the development of accurate timekeeping devices. In addition to his work on pendulums, Galileo made significant advancements in astronomy. Using a telescope, which he improved upon and popularized, Galileo made numerous groundbreaking observations. He discovered that the moon had a rough, mountainous surface, which challenged the prevailing belief in the moon's perfect smoothness. He also observed the four largest moons of Jupiter, now known as the Galilean moons (Io, Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto), and their regular orbits around the planet, which provided evidence against the geocentric model of the universe. Galileo's observations of Venus further supported the heliocentric model proposed by Nicolaus Copernicus. He noted that Venus went through a complete set of phases, similar to the moon, which could only be explained if Venus orbited the sun and not the Earth.
