Product Description "Azam Ali's voice is a glorious, unforgettable instrument." -- Billboard"[A] thought-provoking musical statement ... heartbreakingly beautiful songs." -- Washington PostDean & Dudley Evenson have created an exquisite fusion, bringing together Jewish, Christian, and Muslim music of the Middle East. This deeply moving collection of sacred chants and songs reflects the common yearning for peace shared by these three faiths, all descended from Abraham. This timeless, inspiring, and spiritual album will have crossover appeal to people looking for a more universal approach to the holidays. This disc features world-renowned artists Azam Ali (Vas, Niyaz), Omar Faruk Tekbilek, Jai Uttal, Fadia El-Hage (Vox), and many more great vocalists and musicians. Iranian born Azam Ali is internationally recognized for her work with Vas, the best-selling world music duo she co-founded. She is acclaimed as one of the most gifted singers on the world music stage today. Early Christian women's chants of the Middle East are creatively revived through the magnificent singing of Lebanese contralto Fadia El-Hage.Israeli singer-songwriter Ofer Golany and his Musicians for Peace offer a spiritual treat from Jerusalem. Tienda Dean and Dudley Evenson are the kind of peace proselytizers that would make a conscious objector look like a raging war monger. It permeates their music to a degree that can become cloying. But on Healing the Holy Land, they've curated a powerful collection of trans-global hymns centered on the Middle East. With songs sung in languages that include Aramaic, Farsi, and Hebrew, each track sits slightly askew of traditional music from the ancient era, beginning with the opening "Peace Song" by Iraqi singer Halla Bassam and Sevara Nazarkhan from Uzbekistan, with Nazarkhan singing in English. It's a gorgeous lullaby, originally heard on another collection, Lullabies from the Axis of Evil. They pave the way for artists often tapping their own ancestral roots, but in new ways. Kirtan singer Jai Uttal sings "Shalom," a Hebrew hymn of peace, in an Indian fusion style. "Allah Allah" is performed in an electronically processed style by Niyaz with Iranian born singer Azam Ali; Turkish oud and ney player Omar Faruk Tekbilek reels out a solemn Sufi chant; and Lydia McCauley's ethereal gothic Latin chant morphs into a Middle Eastern dance on "Aeternitas." Dean and Dudley Evenson add their own ethereal track of drifting voices, slow trance rhythms, and meandering echoed flute on the incense-laced seduction of "Peace Piece," which bears no relationship to the Bill Evans tune of the same name. The Evensons' segues are sometimes a bit awkward and they would've been better off not trying to cross-fade tracks and mix in transitional nature sounds. Other than that, they don't hit a false note in a collection that forges a message of universal peace for a region that has rarely known that state of existence, often due to the religious beliefs extolled on Healing the Holy Land. --John Diliberto
