Ethiopia is the only nation in Africa not to have been colonized by Europeans. Although various countries exerted influence upon it, it retained its ruling dynasty until Italy deposed emperor Haile Salassie when he invaded Ethiopia right before the outbreak of WWII in an attempt to turn it into a colony. After Selassie’s restoration to the throne in 1941, he bought out the Bank of Abyssina and it became the Bank of Ethiopia. Unlike previous currencies in which the text of several other languages appeared alongside Amharic, the new currency emphasized the country’s sovereignty by featuring only Amharic alongside Ethiopia’s Imperial symbol the Lion of Judah.
