Descripción
Development of the Soviet armored weapon followed two paths: new designs such as the T-50 and modification of existing tanks. During 1933-1937 the T-26 Mk 1933 was the principal tank type in production in the USSR, built in many variants with the turret in shape of cylinder. Design bureaus working on this tank type used the chassis and hull of the tank as a basis for further modification. The focus was on adapting the armament and the turret to new battle field requirements. Introduction of the tank radio set resulted in the turret extending backwards with the rear compartment. New gun type required stronger base for the recoill mechanism. All these modifications could not be supported by the old straight turret. This resulted in 1937 trials of the new oval conical turret of welded steel plates. It was found that such shape provided better resistance to small calibre fire.
