Recorded in Sheffield During Spring 2000, the Second Album from Mat Steel and Mark Fell for the Label Develops the Aesthetic and Conceptual Anatomy of the First Project. Tienda This is the second release from this Sheffield, U.K., duo, who practice a decidedly mechanical, minimalist brand of techno. The music here is closer to the aural equivalent of an algorithm in action than what most people might think of as composed music. The sounds are principally one- or two-note keyboard hits and metronomic rhythms that are sometimes little more than a clicking sound. Track 7 is about as busy as it gets with two chords, a four-note melody, three percussion sounds and an extra note or two shimmering faintly in the background. The whole CD has a lot of fascinating microdetail, and it works very well as ambient or environmental music--for a little over an hour, you can walk in and out of the room, answer the phone or take a shower, and it'll still be there when you return, humming pleasantly to itself. --Bob Bannister
